Nice work if you can get it.
Meet Kimberley and Bastien who work on plage de la Garoupe from June to September.
Working part-time at the beach for the ‘Mairie d’Antibes’ is nice work if you can get it. This is exactly what Kimberley and Bastien are doing. They both work part-time renting out the municipal sun loungers on plage de la Garoupe. Part of a larger team Bastien and Kimberley work in the mornings from 7.30 until 13.30 five days a week. A different team takes over in the afternoons.
Garoupe is the only beach on the Cap which has sun loungers to rent which are subsidised by the Marie. They charge just 10 euros per day for a bed and a parasol. The only catch is that you can’t reserve them so it’s best to get there early during July and August.
I popped by to find out what kind of people work there.
Kimberley, how did you get this job?
First I had to apply to the Mairie. After about threee months they asked me to come in for an interview which must have gone well because one month later they offered me the job. I started just one month ago.
It is a summer job for me until I go back to my studies in September. I am 21 years old and I am studying to become a pharmacist. This is what I hope to do in the future. It is mainly students who apply to work here so that they can earn some money during the holidays.
What do you love about the job?
Well there is an amazing view from here so it’s a very beautiful place to work and the people are nice too, everyone is happy.
Bastien, how long have you worked here?
I worked here last year for 2 months and this year I will work all through the summer until September. I had to send an application to the Marie which I did last year. There are many people who apply so there is a lot of competition. Luckily for me I was offered one of the jobs available so I was very happy.
What do you do for the rest of the year?
I am 18 and still at college. I am studying for my baccalauréat so after the summer I will go back to that. I am not sure yet what I want to do after that but I hope to be here again next summer. After that who knows.
What do you like about the job?
I love the meeting the people who come here and of course the view is beautiful. Garoupe is a small beach so it’s nice and calm working here too. I also like that I only work in the mornings so I have my afternoons free to go to the beach or hang out with friends.
The Municipal Sun Loungers are at Plage de la Garoupe from 1st june-15th September.
Price: 10 euros per day. Open from 9am-6pm every day.
No reservation just turn up on the day. Get there early in July and August as their 74 beds fill up quickly.
