Veronique a regular visitor to Cap d’Antibes
Introducing Veronique – Proof that Waterskiing keeps you young!
I recently had the pleasure of interviewing and photographing Marco Grilli in Cap d’Antibes. He is the Water ski Instructer based at the Hotel Belles Rives. Right in the middle of our interview I noticed a svelte and stylish Lady out of the corner of my eye. She was sitting on the Pontoon of the Ski school and in the process of zipping up her wetsuit. On her head was one of those fabulous retro swimming caps you just don’t see people wearing anymore.
I abruptly stopped my interview with Marco to catch a photo of her in her pink swimming cap against the beautiful blue of the sea beyond.
Before I could get a photo she had jumped into the water and set off behind the boat on her Mono ski.
Luckily I met her again a few days later (this time in a different swimming cap). This time I had the opportunity to take some photos and have a quick chat.
Her name is Veronique and she has known Marco for around 50 years.
Apparently she comes to the Belles Rives to ski several times a week and has been doing so for decades. Veronique lives in Nice but spent a large amount of time in Juan Les Pins and of course Cap d’Antibes.
“I love coming here to water ski because of Marco. He is a very gentle boat driver and when you are older you need a gentle driver. I need someone who won’t excellerate too fast when pulling me out of the water. Marco isn’t like that at all which is why I ski only with him. If he wasn’t at the Belles Rives then I would follow him wherever he was to ski.”
I asked her if Marco had taught her to ski. She told me that her parents had a boat when she was young so she learnt to water ski with them.
If you are ever at the Hotel Belles Rives mid morning you might be lucky enough to catch Veronique out on her Mono Ski.
